For a few days, Americans all around the country were unusually silent about their opinions on taxes, the role of government, gun control, and other divisive issues. Instead, Americans everywhere were linked in their desire to watch, rewatch, and discuss Kevin Ware’s gruesome leg injury.
The rare moment of tranquility in political affairs has reached a level of unity that hasn’t been achieved since shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Facebook has reported record low numbers in posts mentioning phrases such as the 2nd amendment, share this status for an hour, and traditional marriage. The normally controversial phrases have instead been replaced with unity and reposting of links to videos to watch the exact moment that Kevin Ware’s bone protruded from his leg.
Even conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh said on this Tuesday program that “this is just refreshing. For a few days we’re not Republicans and Democrats, we’re not conservatives and liberals, we’re just Americans watching together in agony as one man shatters his leg and dreams all in the same instant. I’ve never been more proud to be an American. Thank you Kevin Ware.”
The rare moment of political peace in this country is expected to come to an end on Friday when Obama will meet with a local Girl Scout troop, which will undoubtedly bring on much Republican backlash.
